{System Updates} is an experimental, spiral, nonlinear epic poem which merges the literary styles of science fiction, re-mythologisation, and autobiography via techniques of cut-up assemblage. The 90 page manuscript (currently unpublished) consists of the following sections; two prologue poems “where the scenes lay” and “within the spiral of time” these introductory poems give context to the epic poem which consists of nine chapters, entangling intra-relational and internal transitions. The final section is a glossary which expands upon the stylistic devices found within the manuscript.
{System Updates} is Josie Alexandra’s most recent poetic work, and was supported by Creative Victoria’s - Creative Projects Fund.
Key influences on the poem's structure are "The Odyssey" by Emily Wilson and "The Conference of the Birds" by Farid ud-Din Attar. The poem also draws from a diverse range of sources; conversations, podcasts, music, film and many more experiences. By envisioning potential future-making and myth-making {System Updates} aspires to contribute to contemporary literature, probing into futures, questioning at a seemingly hopeless, empty and directionless one.
Ultimately, {System Updates} is a book about transitions, it is a libation for the ones born without a blueprint, coordinates, maps, directives, but with a compass in hand(s) - navigating towards praxises of self-consent and intra-dependency.
